Transforming Lives in Ghana: Support Our Solar Water Expansion
At Easy Water for Everyone, we are dedicated to creating sustainable water solutions for communities in need. In January 2020, we partnered with the Afram Plains Development Organization (APDO) to install two Gravity Water Stations in the Kodidi and Madagascar communities located in Ghana’s Kwahu Afram Plains South District.
These water stations were designed to extract water from the Oti River, which is over 600 meters from both communities.
Overcoming Initial Challenges
Initially, these stations relied on gasoline-powered pumps for water distribution. However, due to the fact that adulterated gasoline is often supplied to these remote areas, the pumps frequently break down. After just two weeks, the pumps required costly repairs, and transporting them to the district capital for maintenance became a major challenge.
The Shift to Solar Power
Recognizing the need for a reliable and sustainable solution, Easy Water for Everyone launched a fundraising campaign to replace the gasoline pumps with solar-powered systems. Despite the challenges of working from boats during installation, our team successfully installed the solar-powered pumps, ensuring a steady supply of clean water to these communities.
Today, the residents of Kodidi and Madagascar enjoy continuous access to clean water. The new system operates under a pay-to-fetch model, empowering local women as "waterpreneurs" who manage water sales and funds. These women work closely with the Water and Sanitation Management Committees to ensure the sustainability of the system, while also supporting their own livelihoods.
Next Steps: Expanding to More Communities
While we have made significant progress in Kodidi and Madagascar, there is still work to be done. Two additional communities in Ghana’s Oti Region urgently need solar-powered pumps to ensure safe and reliable access to clean water.
